When to Retrofit Instead of Replace
Retrofitting makes sense when your bucket structure is sound but the internal components are outdated, worn, or no longer meet your needs. You get modern functionality while keeping your existing enclosure, stabs, and door hardware.
Good Candidates for Retrofit
- Bucket is mechanically sound
- Door and handle in good condition
- Stabs are not corroded or damaged
- Enclosure paint is intact
- Only controls or components need updating
Better to Replace Completely
- Severe rust or corrosion
- Damaged stabs or bus connections
- Door warped or won't latch properly
- Need to change bucket height
- Extensive internal damage
Industry Trend
VFD Motor Upgrades: The #1 Retrofit We Build
Across the country, energy codes are changing how industrial facilities operate motors. Many states and municipalities now mandate that any motor 50 HP or larger must be replaced with a variable frequency drive when the motor is changed out. This is based on ASHRAE 90.1 energy efficiency standards and DOE motor regulations.
This creates a simple MCC question: where does the VFD go?
Option 1: Remote VFD + Feeder Bucket
Install the VFD at or near the motor. Run a 200A-400A feeder bucket from your MCC to power the drive. This is the approach most facilities are choosing today.
- VFD heat stays out of the MCC
- Shorter motor leads reduce harmonics
- Service the VFD without shutting down the MCC
- No bucket size constraints for large drives
Option 2: VFD Inside the Bucket
We mount the VFD directly inside an MCC bucket with proper isolation, ventilation, and control wiring. Good for smaller drives or when you want centralized control.
- Everything in one location
- Integrated door-mounted controls
- Works well for drives under 100 HP
- Any VFD brand (ABB, Siemens, AB, etc.)
We specialize in both approaches. Whether you need a 200A feeder bucket to power a remote VFD or a complete VFD-in-bucket build, we can have it built and shipped in 3-5 business days. We build for all major MCC brands: Square D, Siemens, GE, Cutler-Hammer, Allen-Bradley, and Westinghouse.

Common Retrofit Projects
From VFD upgrades to door device replacements, here is what we build most often.
Most Requested
VFD Upgrades
Convert an across-the-line starter to VFD control. We remove the old starter components and install a modern variable frequency drive with proper isolation, bypass options, and control integration. Popular for adding speed control to existing motors or improving energy efficiency.
Breaker Replacement
Replace outdated or obsolete breakers with modern equivalents. We match the frame size and AIC rating while upgrading to current technology. Includes proper torquing, testing, and documentation.
Soft Start Addition
Add soft start capability to an existing FVNR starter. Reduces inrush current and mechanical stress during motor startup while keeping your existing overload relay and control logic.
Control Modernization
Update old relay logic with modern PLCs, replace mechanical timers with digital equivalents, or add remote monitoring capabilities. We rewire and integrate new controls while maintaining existing door devices and power components.
Overload Relay Upgrade
Replace thermal overload relays with modern electronic units offering better accuracy, adjustability, and diagnostic features. Includes communication capability for remote monitoring.
Door Device Updates
Replace worn switches, add modern indicating lights, install new meters, or upgrade to touchscreen HMIs. Modernize your door interface while keeping the internal power components unchanged.
How It Works
Our Retrofit Process
From assessment to shipping, we handle everything. Most retrofits are completed in under a week.
Initial Assessment
Ship us your bucket or send detailed photos. We inspect the condition and confirm what can be reused versus what needs replacement. You get a detailed quote with timeline.
Component Removal
We carefully remove outdated components, document existing wiring, and clean the enclosure. Any damaged hardware or mounting provisions are repaired.
New Component Installation
Install new components per your spec. All wiring is properly sized, routed, and labeled. Control circuits are tested independently before final assembly.
Testing and Documentation
Full functional testing including insulation resistance, control logic verification, and load simulation. You receive as-built drawings and test reports.
